AUGUST 18: INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR FOREST FIRE PREVENTION.
Marked by two heat waves and a prolonged drought, the summer of 2025 saw nearly 15,000 wildfires in France, destroying approximately 30,000 hectares of forests and other natural areas.
The International Day for the Prevention of Forest Fires aims to promote investment in forest management and the implementation of prevention measures. It serves as a reminder that sustainable forest management and fire prevention are key challenges for the protection of France’s natural heritage.
To mark the occasion, the National Forest Service (ONF) is organizing events designed to help the public learn about the measures being taken to protect forests from fires. Participants can learn about the work carried out throughout the year: maintenance of forest roads, monitoring, prevention, rapid response, and public awareness. These events, open to everyone, help highlight the importance of these efforts for public safety and the preservation of forests.
Forêts en Scène Festival 2026
From March 18 to 29, 2026, the Forêts en Scène festival invites the general public to experience the forest in a new way. Foresters and teams from the ONF are offering free activities throughout France.

·exploring the local flora and fauna;
·demonstrations of forestry trades;
·moments of well-being in the great outdoors;
·Fun activities for the whole family.
This event is a unique opportunity to discover the richness of France's forests, connect with passionate professionals, and gain a better understanding of the major environmental and climate challenges of our time.
Raising Awareness to Better Prevent
The purpose of this event is to raise public awareness about the dangers of wildfires and to promote effective prevention measures.
In France, nearly 90% of fires are caused by human activity. Firefighting begins long before a fire breaks out, thanks to a proactive risk prevention policy.
The national wildfire awareness campaign informs citizens about the steps they can take to prevent fires and protect the environment.
Launched for the 7th consecutive year by several ministries, including the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Ecological Transition, this campaign has several objectives:
·raise public awareness of the proper precautions to take to prevent fires;
·reduce the number of human-caused fires by combating risky behaviors, such as discarding cigarette butts or lighting barbecues in the great outdoors;
·Promote responsible behaviors, such as clearing brush, safely storing fuel, properly disposing of yard waste, and exercising caution when using tools that can produce sparks.
Prevention Tips
To reduce the risk of fire, everyone can take a few simple steps:
·Do not smoke in the forest, and dispose of cigarette butts only in an ashtray;
·Avoid barbecuing in the great outdoors and use only designated areas;
·Clear brush from the areas around homes and remove combustible materials;
·Follow the authorities' guidelines during periods of high risk.
The Importance of Raising Awareness
With the increase in droughts and heat waves linked to climate change, the risk of wildfires is becoming increasingly significant.
France has approximately 17.5 million hectares of forest, spread across mainland France and Corsica. It is one of the most forested countries in Europe, which increases its vulnerability to wildfires, particularly during the summer months.
Because 9 out of 10 fires are caused by human activity, everyone can help reduce this risk by acting responsibly.
